But for those that go out of their way to malign and make fun of the band, this is where the Rorschach test comes in. Now you might not like Coldplay’s songs, music is subjective, that is understandable.
So Coldplay gets blasted as being cheesy, which admittedly they can be at times, as uncool and wimpy. Once is okay, more than that seems too heartfelt and people don’t know what to make of that. The rock creed is “Keep those feelings bottled up.” Nor is it very rock and roll to implore your audience numerous times to donate to the Red Cross.
It’s not cool in rock to be so open with your feelings. Lots of people have covered Petty this week, but Martin takes it the extra step of saying, mid-song, “Thanks, Tom.” Or they criticize Coldplay because they’ll throw in a cover of Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” as they did last night with guest James Corden, in honor of the late great rock icon, who passed this week. That Martin dances like a fool and isn’t afraid to admit it is why so many like to make fun of Coldplay. Bounding back and forth between the main stage and a mini-stage in the middle of the floor, the band went through basically a pop radio playlist of the last twenty years.Īmong the numerous hits that delighted the throng were “Fix You,” which frontman Chris Martin performed while laying down on the stage, “The Scientist,” “Viva La Vida,” a joyous “A Sky Full Of Stars” and a fun "Something Just Like This," their smash with the Chainsmokers, both in the encore, and a delightful “Charlie Brown,” during which Martin implored the crowd to put down their cell phones and live in the song for five minutes, pointing our he has no problem dancing like a fool, so they could to. Seeing that it is the song that introduced them to the world and still one of their biggest hits, it was a surprising inclusion so early in the set, until you realize just how many hits they actually have.
